Chapter thirteen

I could not stop thinking about the events of the first night, and the sequential nights that followed. A blush graced my cheeks when I thought about it. Even the memory made me hot and bothered. After adventurous sexual escapades, Maddox ran his fingers through my hair, and we talked into the night. It felt as if the reservoir that had been dry and barren now had life. He encouraged me to examine every part of the tomb to find any clues or keys to unlocking the power within.

Sometimes, I felt helpless regarding what was expected of me. I finally fell asleep in his arms after unloading all my burdens. This morning when I woke, I felt rejuvenated and rested. I stretched largely in the now-empty bed.

Maddox was good at getting up before me and making himself scarce in the morning. I think that is when he handled all the kingly things he was responsible for. I floated down the hall, gliding on the sweet words Maddox had spoken the night before. How was I expected to focus on anything else today?

I entered the library cool and collected, but it only took five minutes before I was about to burst with questions. “Sian?”

“Yes, Nia?”

“Have you ever been in love?”

Sian stopped what she was doing with a cauldron and all the ingredients she kept in neat, little bottles to raise a brow at me. Confusion tinged every word she spoke.

“I can’t say I’ve been in love. I’ve had crushes and bedmates, but love?” she chuckled. “No, I don’t suppose I will find true love until I find my mate.”

I immediately bestowed her with my full attention. I’ve not heard that term before.

“Mate?” I inquired.

Sian nodded. “Fated mate. You know, destined to be yours by the irreverent powers that be, the very ones that created the Gods and Goddesses and this very realm.”

“I’ve not heard of fated mates.” My head reeled with this newfound information. Something in me told me this was extremely important, and the strange bond that had formed with Maddox thrummed. I had wondered about that bond since it was formed but was reluctant to ask Maddox about it because I didn’t even know if it was real. Even when I loved Zeke, I never felt like this.

This… A deep, all-consuming desire to be with him. In the way I had always felt about Maddox.

“Your realm does not have fated mates?”

“Not that I know of.”

Sian huffed. “Well, in Regala, all souls are bound together from creation. No matter how many lives you live, you will always be attracted to the soul you’ve been bound to by the sacred life force that drives us all. Doesn’t matter what gender or form you take; your soul has been divided, and it becomes your life's mission to find that connection to feel whole again. Of course, many are married or in love with another in the meantime, but as soon as the bond is formed, you’re allowed to break that connection to be with your mate.
